What does Río Negro mean?
In his poem "The Negro Speaks of Rivers", Langston Hughes wrote, "My soul has grown deep like the rivers." From this beautiful poem comes the name Río Negro pronounced REEOO NAYGRO. Río Negro, a name given to the group by Broderick Santiago, means "Black River" in Spanish.
When is your next CD coming out?
Our third CD is scheduled for release in the beginning of 2008. We are very excited about this release because it will be our best yet. How much do you all charge for a performance?
Our rate varies depending on the details of the performance. We can go as small as a duo to as large as an eight piece band. We perform at events as private as small weddings to as public as large jazz festivals. What type of music do you all play?
We focus on Latin Jazz with a touch of other genres including Salsa, Timba, Merengue, and even Reggaetón. However, very rarely do we have a singers.
How many band members does Río Negro have?
The band size depends on the performance. However, our normal size is four or five members consisting of saxophone, congas, drums, bass, and piano.
Do you all play consistently at a venue?
No. We currently do not play consistently at one venue.
When and how was the band founded?
The band was founded in 1999 on the campus of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia. As college students, band members Broderick Santiago and Kevin Johnson formed the band after realizing their shared interest in Latin music.
Where are you all from?
Band members are originally from New York, Puerto Rico, and Boston.
When is your next tour?
We will begin touring around the time of the release of our new CD in the beginning of 2008.
